From the President's Desk
Dear Valued Members,
Wishing a very Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers in our PMIGL community. This special day provides a perfect opportunity to honor the remarkable mothers within our chapter and beyond. We celebrate their invaluable contributions both within their families and as essential pillars in the project management field.
As we celebrate Mother's Day, we also recognize May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This month, we honor the rich history and significant contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Their diverse cultures, traditions, and histories enrich our community and strengthen our collective endeavors.
As AI continues to make the mark across various industries, PMI is proud to introduce PMI Infinity, an AI-powered co-pilot to enhance project and program management success for all PMI members. If you haven’t explored this remarkable tool yet, I strongly encourage you to utilize this fantastic opportunity!
Yours sincerely,
Anthony Amalraj, MBA, PgMP®
PMIGL President
Better Together Project
Over in Mt Pleasant, Michigan, students have been using their project management skills to give their community much-needed support. This past year, the Project Management Chapter of Central Michigan University has spearheaded their Better Together Project, a community-driven and student-led initiative that aims to identify unique, local problems and solve them with innovative solutions. What started as an idea between Mike Callahan, of Callahan & Rose Consulting, and Ryan Cook, President of Project Management Chapter/Project Lead for the Better Together Project, has blossomed into a lifelong mission amongst students.
Recently, the group finished up their I Inc Career Workshop. This workshop aimed to tackle the problems that participants have had when finding a career. We aimed to help participants build their personal brand and identify their “sweet spot,” meaning an attribute of themselves that is unique and will likely be the most sellable part of themselves. Participants also gained first access to StorAI, a groundbreaking artificial intelligence that is based around educating its users with career coaching. StorAI not only includes several of its own lessons based on the I Inc Workshop but also includes a chatbot that is specifically designed to answer any questions a user might have about career development.
The Better Together Project has also committed to giving back to the veterans of Mid-Michigan as well. Recently, we have been in the process of kickstarting our next program “Tunes for Veterans.” This is a program that gives free guitar lessons to veterans in our community. We provide the guitar for lessons as well as the instructor and music, all the veteran needs to bring is an interest in learning! Currently, we already have three guitars, and have been deep in the process of recruiting volunteers and veterans. We hope that this program, as well as the many others that the Better Together Project will someday complete, will inspire others to start their own Better Together Project to strengthen their community and build something greater than themselves.
Recapping 2024 Spring Symposium:
Transforming Project Management in an AI World
By Michelle Baker MBA, PMP, PgMP Symposium Director
On April 19, 2024, 22 PMIGL volunteers hosted 225 project managers on the hottest topic in business today. Our opening and closing keynote featured Microsoft AI executive, speaker, and entrepreneur Dona Sarkar. She oversees the Microsoft Copilot tool and platform, is a dynamic speaker who evangelizes AI across the world, and is a TED talk speaker as well.
She encouraged us to #DoTheThing (donasarkar.com), and not to be afraid of AI. It’s not the end all, because it still needs to be driven by humans. Sometimes it’s spot on, and at others, it might need to be seasoned. We are experimenting with it and that will only make it better.
We had 12 breakout speakers and 1 poster presenter on varying topics on how project managers not only can use AI to help make our lives easier but to also innovate, optimize, and strategize to continue to move our profession forward. It also touches various areas of our lives from construction to electronic media to healthcare.
In case you missed attending this year’s Symposium in person, stay tuned for future opportunities to hear from these speakers at a special price. Of course, we always have lessons learned to explore, so please join us with your ideas for next year’s Symposium!
